Because they are Amphibious and they have an expensive Engine. Furthermost all the materials on making a boat is expensive wether its steel or wood etc.

Seems a little opinionated if you ask me.

At what price do you think they should be sold at?

Quite frankly l am enjoying the tax write off our vessel gives us each year when l deduct the amount of interest paid.and will continue enjoying it for roughly another 14 years!

It is only expensive and overpriced usually if one cannot afford it.

buy a used one; not so expensive that way.

You do not say what sort of boat u r looking at.
A cruiser? A small boat/large boat? A sea-going? English canal boat? A fishing boat?
One reason boats r ''overpriced'' is that the things fitted on them r expensive. Because the boat market is relatively small, manufacturers can not mass produce, so, for example a small 12 volt fridge is going to set u back £400, a small 12 volt microwave is another £400. A gas cooker which will run off bottled gas, maybe. Engines have to be marinised (more expense), the hull must be watertight & an electric pump fitted to be able to pump out water should the craft be holed.
Imagine that u might be looking at a motorhome (how much is one of those?), then add the facility for using it on water & upgrading it to meet the very rigorous demands made by legislation & the Boat Builders Association which r far in excess of those which have to be met by a land vehicle & u start to see where the money goes.

You think boats are expensive, try airplanes, for what they are. Boats have to float, not corrode, not explode, basically operate in one of the worst environments around all the while carrying people out and back to there destinations. There are cheap ones and expensive ones, but you get what you pay for.

l agree that boats, especially new boats can be very expensive, but when u really look at what goes into them u begin to see why:

New boat prices represent the work & materials that go into them. Unlike a typical home, the materials must be shaped into odd shapes, requiring complex molds & hours of labor. They must be able to hold up to salt water & unlike homes r not only outfitted with propulsion, but must stand up the forces of travel. Fiberglass for example, is an oil-based product & we all know what is been happening to the price of oil world wide. A specialized stainless steel fitting is much more expensive to make than a mass-produced non marine hardware store parts. Of course all refrigeration, plumbing parts, etc must also be designed especially for this market.

Use boats, however can represent a good value. l just closed on a used 30-foot sailboat for under 12K. This is a boat l can & will be living on for months at a time. Like a car it will take me from place to place, like a home l can live in it. All for under 12K. l find that kind of amazing. (granted l will put a few more grand into it)

Why are cars so expensive?? For what they are . bits-o-metal,plastic and rubber Way over-priced !!! . What is your point?? or 'real' question??

#1. Free market economy. People & companies making boats r out to make money, not be a bunch of communing hippies sharing everything. Gotta make that green.. $$$$

#2. Boats r not automobiles, if a car is cabin leaks badly or suffers damage, u do not drown,or get left adrift all alone in the open water.

#3. Boat manufacturing usually uses very expensive & very dangerous chemicals & elaborate manufacturing processes. Automobiles only require a well designed assembly line.

If people are paying that kind of money for 'em, then they're priced just about right.

Because they are a luxury item.

Luxury items are bought by people with money.

If you can afford a luxury item, than you can afford a little more.

Take the Chevy/GMC SUVs: they are the highest margin vehicles in the GM fleet.
