The propeller in in the water facing the stern. When it turns it forces water out the back.

Newtons law of equal and opposite reaction is why the boat moves forward.

A boat motor is just an internal combustion engine. Most of them use the water the boat is in as coolant.Outboard engine r example of this. A honda 225 is the same as the engine in a honda odysey van except the engine is vertical instead of horizontal. Inboard diesel & gas engines r internal combustion engines that use the sea water to absorb heat from the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger may have ethylene glycol(radiator fluid) or a type of oil in it. The heat then runs overboard. This id called heat transfer. So u see, the difference between a marine engine & the engine in a truck or car is simply the cooling system.

The only other difference is the transmission which is seperate from the engine or what u called a motor. In the marine environment a transmission is called a reduction gear. On a outboard motor is it called a lower unit.
