You can use any engine that you can get to fit. All you have to watch is the shaft diameter and engine mountings.

Your question is a little hard to understand. There r differences between ''marine-ized'' engines & stock auto engines. If ur question is can u switch to a V-6 or V-8 GM then the answer is No! It is not only the engine but the drive that is mated to the engine. Everything from gear ratio to mountings change. Perhaps if u could edit ur question so we could better understand what u want to do. One option is to get another chevy 3L block at a wreckers.

For different engines there r a few considerations.new marine exhaust manifold.carb.ignition. Then.you need a shaft that will mate up to ur gearbox/outdrive or u will be getting it machined. You will likely need a machine shop to make an adapter plate to mount the gearbox/outdrive to the back of ur engine as well. This is what makes it really expensive.the new parts that u could not swap & the machine shop. Plus the cost of modifying engine mounts & beds.

Honestly.get another matching engine to bolt in. OR..get a whole used marine powertrain with outdrive & all.

The 3 liter is an industrial motor not used in cars, therefor hard(er) to find, they show up on ebay though, also new.
Fitting another engine is possible but the rear engine mount housing has the specific 4 cyl. GM bolt pattern.
One car engine that would fit is the 2.5 ltr GM pontiac ''Iron duke'' , the mercruiser exhaust does not go on the 2.5 cyl. head so u ll have to swap it. Be aware that car engine bolt onn`s (carb,starter,dyno..) r not ''marine certified'' parts that r made to prevent sparks cousing a fire!
