l have a 15' fiberglass fishing boat. rated for 40hp and im putting a 55hp on it. the transom looks like it has some minor damage. im wanting to take the wood out of the transom and replace it, but am afraid l may either end up with a major job l may not be able to complete or doing a totally unnecessary repair. how do l know if it needs to be replaced for sure. im on very limited funds for this project so im sure l cant afford the shop.if replacing the wood in the transom is the answer to my questions, does anyone know of a website that will teach me what l need to know? all good advice is apprecieated.

you can install a plate they sell for that its a transom saver unless your transom is really bad than l would get the plate it cost about 20 dollars

l have a 140 on a boat that is rated for a 115 any damage to the transom on a fiberglass boat is bad when fixing this problem make sure the plate/3/4 in plywood covers the area of concern by at least a foot then u could get fiberglass from any parts store to patch any soar spots a little sanding & it can be like new fiberglass can be formed any way u want it to have fun with it & make sure if is structural it would be bad to lose ur motor over a little $ & time

A reinforcing plate is like putting a bandaid on a shotgun wound.

If there is any rot or damage in the transom, it is just a matter of time till ur motor falls into the lake. The transom has to be one solid piece. Sheer lunacy to hang a motor on anything else.

Transom repair is a huge job -- take the rubrail & top cap off, dig out all the old wood, fabricate a new transom from plywood & fiberglass layers, fit it in, drill & seal drain, livewell intakes, motor mount holes, reinforce with fiberglass gussets & tape, reinstall cap & rubrail, rehang outboard.

The transom damage would be the sign that you need to tell you that you should not put the heavier motor on it- a lot of motors wind up on the bottom of the lake this way- My transom needed the wood replaced in it- called a fiberglass boat repair shop and got an estimate- $3,500- l got another boat instead.
