How do you adjust the timing on a 1965 Johnson 33 Horse Electric

OK Bob, follow these steps & ur there. First remove the flywheel. Ya l know there is a decompression rod (Remove it & put it in a box. Then the pull starter, Nut & starter pawl. Use the steering wheel puller u got for Christmas & 3 long 1/4 20 bolts using the pawl holes for the puller bolts --Now Listen---do not screw the puller bolts in more than 4 turns. (it pokes holes in the coils!) OK? disconnect the throttle. --little arm outside the motor cover down low. Stainless clip. passenger side. Now shift it into forward. Manually throttle up till the breaker plate hits the full throttle stop. Look into the carb & see if the throttle is wide open. The Brass on stainless flat rod that ran the throttle has 2 slotted screws. These will loosen to let u push the throttle to wide open. Now move the throttle a few times & look again to make sure it stayed put. Return throttle to idle. You will see a stamping in the brass wedge bolted to the breaker plate. This is the pick up point for the throttle. Advance the throttle till this mark is lined up with the little roller on top of the carb. There is a pinch screw on the side of this leaver with a slot in it which will allow u to adjust this roller to make the carb open when this stamping moves past. Now ur almost there. Adjust the points to .20. Make sure they fire opposite one another (exactly) If they have not been looked at for a while, they will be covered in oil that leaked past the top seal. Spray them up with carb cleaner-- & if u want this to run better--use a points file to clean them up. One tip- after washing filed & set, take a piece of paper & draw it through the closed points to clean off the last of the solvent. install the flywheel. Not a lot of torque, better ck the book- Look at the big bumps on the cylinder head & see if they have the paint burned off them. That would be the fault of that decompression link rod u took off the hand starter. So leave it off. Start it up on water--read in the water.-- & adjust the throttle speed which is right near the cable anchor. Hope it is a runner-- the runners were great little engine.
