putting 55hp on 15' fiberglass boat rated for 40hp. transom already has some minor damage. ive noticed some type of plates on some boats. are these designed to solve my problem? l would consider replacing transom myself, after doing some homework, but would prefer ''quick fix'' (if such thing exists).saftey cant be compromised, but cosmetic appearance can be. if it wasnt for the existing damage l wouldnt feel necessary to strenghten. onbudget. how do l fix this myself?

You can buy an aluminium plate to put over your transom and this will help. (for now) l really do recommend that you fix the transom properly in the future when your budget will allow you to.Even after you do repair the transom, l would put your aluminium plate back on for added strength.Good luck.

The plates that you've noticed on other boats, probably r not
there to solve a problem, they're there to PREVENT a problem.
If u suspect that ur transom is weak(but not rotten) in the area where the motor is mounted then a reinforcment plate would be advised.
if this craft is in salt water much of the time, l recommend 6-9mm stainless steel, extending out 12 in from the motor mount holes.(this a special grade of stainless for salt water)
if u take it back & forth between fresh & salt then i'd recommend a 1/4 in aluminum extending out 6-10 in from motor mount holes.
THESE PLATES ARE NOT THERE TO SOLVE A PROBLEM.., BUT RATHER TO PREVENT ONE.

The function of this plate is to distribute stress across the transom, so the area around the motor mounts is not weakened.
