16 was only used for 63-64

You need to provide the horsepower of the outboard or the model number. The number the previous poster could be right or it could be VERY wrong.

Different models or horsepower outboards of the same manufacturer can have the same serial number. You need to provide the Horsepower rating for your outboard.

My source is showing that # is 1962. It also shows that in 1964 Merc made a 65, not a 70, but l could be wrong. If this is a DR (direct reversing) motor, good luck on that control box, they are different than anything else, and probably there are few left in existance. You could try the Antique Outboard Motor Club, Inc.
