This is a complicated process and yet simple.
Try some sites online:

Depends on the boat as to how far u can sail into the wind. Most sailboats will sail about 45 degrees off the wind by using sails & aerodynamics.

The no-sail zone is about 90 degrees wide — about 45 degrees on either side of the wind direction, or from 10:30 to 1:30, if u like the clock. In this zone, a sailboat can not generate power from its sails & will coast to a stop. The problem is that ur sails luff (flap) even when u pull them in all the way.

As u enter the no-sail zone from the sail zone, the front edge (luff) of ur sails start luffing a little bit (it looks like the front of the sail is bubbling), & u start to slow down. If u turn to the very middle of the no-sail zone, ur sails flap like flags, & ur boat quickly coasts to a stop. In fact, if u stay in the no-sail zone too long, the wind blows ur boat backward, which is called being in irons. Getting in irons happens to every first-time sailor.

But the beauty of sailing is that u have a way around this apparently forbidden territory. To get to a destination directly upwind in the no-sail zone (say 12:00), u can take a zigzag route, sort of like hiking up a very steep mountain. This technique involves sailing close-hauled & periodically tacking (a maneuver where u turn the boat from 1:30 to 10:30 or vice versa). With this knowledge, u can literally sail wherever u want!

You must be very clear on one point: No boat can sail a course directly into (toward) the wind. If u try to do so, the sails start luffing, no matter how tight u try to trim them — like they do when the bow is pointed into the wind at the dock. The boat glides to a stop & eventually blows backward, like any object floating on the water.

First you may have never noticed the wind machines located around coastal areas. Most of these are coin operated, so get a good supply of quarters. Then once on the boat, find the ''auto start button'' it will take care of everything! Oh!, wear your life jacket and captains cap. Good Luck!

Find somebody to take you out on the water.

When thinking of a sailboat most people envision what is called a ''Bermuda rig'' which consists of a triangular mainsail (pronounced ''mainsul'') & a triangular headsail or ''jib.'' The Bermuda rig has a vertical mast & a horizontal boom to which the mailsail is affixed. In a very general sense the ''throttle'' of the boat r lines called ''sheets'' which pull the boom towards the middle of the boat to speed up (particularly when heading close to the direction of the wind) or lets the boom swing out to the sides of the boat to slow down.

Depending on the boat, u steer either by a tiller (typically smaller boats under 27') or a wheel (27' or greater). The tiller looks like a wooden pole. It is sometimes counter-intuitive for new sailors since to go right (starboard) u push the tiller in the opposite direction (to the left, or to ''port''). The wheel is easier since it works like a car.

As suggested by others, get someone to take u out sailing. Sailors r typically eager to have someone crew with them & share the sport. The best part of sailing is that moment when u turn the engine off & u only hear the wind, sails & water.

Good luck!

l would frankly recommend taking the time to take a class on it, it will save you a world of grief and reinventing the wheel. The two main categories of classes will be centerboard sailing (sailing dinghies), and keelboat sailing (cruisers and racers of about 24' and larger). If at all possible, find a school which is certified by either US Sailing (ussailing.org) or the American Sailing Association (asa.com), or the equivalent organization in your country if you're not in the US.
