l will be taking sailing lessons soon and need to purchase a life vest.I am clueless.Help me out.

I am not a strong swimmer and we will be learning how to recover from a capsize.l hope to get something that will be comfortable to wear and still allow me to move freely.

Any guidance?l do not wanna spend an arm and a leg.l also need one for a teen girl.Can l get a good one that l wo not become dissatisfied with for a couple years for less than a hundred bucks?

How long is it reasonable to expect them to last if they are taken care of?

l would recommend you go to Dick is Sporting Goods Store and try on several life vests til you get one that is comfortable and correct fit. Make sure that your vest is USCG certified. A good life vest should with proper care last for years. Good luck.

Try on some Type 3 jackets. They are like vests and are very comfortable. They are the type used for water skiing as well and are available in many colors. Get something bright that can be easily seen. Orange is my favorite. Type 1 & 2 are bulkier but do offer more support and flotation.

Years ago there were the WWI l cork life vest. Now there are many styles and materials, even inflatable ones. Given your $$$limit you should be able to find several that will work. Try West Marine on line or local Walmart...You will know it when you see it.

well, what u can do, is go to a company like ''playitagainsports.com'' & purchase a used or refurbished vest, as u may not want to use it forever. Most rivers & public waterparks will furnish vests that u can borrow, since almost every person that drowns in a river is because they do not have a vest on. l have heard that a good fitting vest or jacket is the main objective. It is best that it does not fit u loosely, as it could slip off as u get thrown into the water.

If you are not a strong swimmer then get a Type l life preserver. A basic Type l will be $50 and a commercial Type l about $99. They are designed to keep your head out of the water in the event you are unconcious. If you can be hit with the boom you can be knocked unconcious.
