James Watt

The first steam engine was invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712 to pump water from mines. Later improvements were made by James Watt And Richard Trevithick.

Thomas Savery was an English military engineer and inventor who in 1698, patented the first crude steam engine based on Denis Papin is Digester or pressure cooker of 1679.

Savery produced steam engines that were considered to be the first practical design but were unreliable.
Papins & others improved the design further to make the engines economically viable.(1712)
Watt further improved the design to make the steam engine safe & reliable & to use far less coal.
Watt also developed an engine with a rotary motion allowing it to be used in many more applications.

The first known use of a steam engine was in the first century AD in Egypt. It probably did not catch on because slaves were much cheaper & easier to come by.
