If u think about this, all ports would be a hub for cargo & jobs. Some ports specialize in containers & some ports do other cargoes. typically the container biz is east/west business, meaning the cargo moves east or west across the world. if cargo is landed on the west coast if the USA it is then railed or trucked towards the east, & also the opposite is true if containers r landed in an east coast port, they will eventually work west, towards the heart land of the USA.

Now, for example, New Orleans, located on the Mississippi River is a hub of sorts as well. Inbound steel products, for example, will get unloaded from a ship direct to barges. the barges then moved up river to Chicago, Louisville, Cincinnati, or even Pittsburgh. From these inland ports the cargo can be trucked & or railed to its final destination. Coal & Grain & other bulk cargoes will be loaded in barges up river, then transported down to New Orleans for export shipments to all over the world. So in essence, all ports r a point where cargoes funnel through before heading to the final destination. good luck!
